On Tuesday we drove to Mackinaw City and found Mackinaw City Campground, a campground just out of town, for our 3-day stay. On our first day we went to Mackinac Island. The second day we drove to Sault Ste. Marie to see the locks connecting Lake Superior to Lakes Michigan and Huron. The third day we spent in Mackinaw City and saw the retired U.S. Coast Guard ice breaker Mackinaw.
I was in this area with my parents when I was in junior high and remember the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the lunch menu (hooray, finally something I liked), and the locks further north in Sault St. Marie. More details and pictures to come.
You may have noticed that I’m spelling the name of the city and the name of the island differently. That’s because the locals change the spelling of Mackinaw/Mackinac based on whether the area had been British or French. Tricky, huh!
