As we’ve mentioned, we love finding the places where movies and TV shows have been filmed. Roslyn is one of those places. We enjoyed the quirky show Northern Exposure in the 1990s that supposedly takes place in Alaska. When we were watching it, Barney started exploring where it was really filmed, and he found out it was in Roslyn, Washington—he looked up where it was, and here we are. Also, if you ever watched the TV show The Man in the High Castle, you may recognize some of these locations since part of it was filmed in this area.

Roslyn is located in the Cascade Mountains, about 80 miles east of Seattle. The town was founded in 1886 as a coal mining company town. During the 20th century, the town gradually transitioned away from coal, and today its economy is primarily based on forestry and tourism. Covid-19 brought a lot of people to the area, and resorts started being built around the town. The bicycle shop owner we spoke with appreciated the business he was getting for his mountain bikes and e-bikes.

Supposedly a woman named Roslyn settled here and built her cafe, and that was the start of the town of Cicely. Now we’re going to be looking at some of the pictures that might be familiar to you if you also liked this quirky show.

Outside scenes of the show were filmed in Roslyn, but inside scenes were filmed in a studio. However, we bet the inside of The Brick gave the directors some ideas.

This was such a fun day driving around to find these place thanks to ChatGPT, and our lunch at The Brick was delicious. Next we’re going to a town south of The Dalles that was the center piece of a series of cowboy romances that I read.
