We had a fun day driving to Eagle Harbor (northwestern part of Keweenaw Peninsula) and saw another lighthouse and life-saving station on the northwest corner of the peninsula. It’s at the place where ships going east toward Sault Ste. Marie or west toward Duluth, Minnesota, make the curve around Copper Harbor to go toward their destination.
Center Mine ghost town
We also went to a ghost town to see the outlines for an old copper mine called Center Mine. It was one of the most successful copper mines in the county.
A rich ore body produced a total of $9,770,628 by July 1898 when the property was abandoned. The Central Mine was the biggest and most profitable producer in the Keweenaw District at one tome. Population reached around 1250 people, and reunions of the descendants of former residents are still held here annually. Most of the miners were Cornish.
Eventually the Kearsarge Lode, discovered in the1890s, produced more ore.
A third stop was at The Jampot, a bakery and jam store that at least 8 people told us to visit. We enjoyed our treats! The store is owned and operated by a group of monks.
My sandwich for lunch at Eagle Harbor Inn was best I’ve ever had. Wish I could go back!
