On the road again–with the new transmission–but we had to drive 500 miles before we could start pulling the RV. So here we go on an overnight trip. Our trip goal was to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokey Mountains. I had been there before but Barney hadn’t, so I wanted him to see the beauty.
First stop was Clemson, SC, (go Tigers) to see the university that we’ve heard so much about. It’s huge. After Clemson, we drove some back roads to Cashiers, NC, and ate lunch at Cornucopia. Yum. For a number of years we’ve been going there in late October as an excuse to see the colors in the trees high in the mountains. With our upcoming trip, we would have missed this adventure so we we’re glad to go to this favorite restaurant now.
After lunch we drove on up to Cherokee, NC, to spend the night. Dinner was at an Indian-owned restaurant
Today we started driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and were awed by the views. The tallest mountain was 6000 feet. After the Sierras and Rockies, we loved the green and the rounded tops of these mountains. The Smokey Mountains actually have a blue smokey haze over them (there’s a scientific reason why).
To come home, we had lunch in Hendersonville, NC. Neighbors from California (Jim and Karen) had lived nearby when we first moved to Georgia. This small town has the most vibrant main street we’ve ever seen. We drove our 500 miles, and are ready to take off for a long trip next week.
