Now that we’ve finished traveling with Lewis and Clark, we’re going to be sauntering home for the next month and a half. If you’ve traveled with us very much, you’ve realized that we enjoy seeing the locations that our favorite TV shows and books are based on. In this post seeing 3 sets of friends in the northwest who are on our Christmas card list and that we haven’t seen for years. Then we’ll be checking out the locations where Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart is filmed.

Tacoma, Washington
Our friend Dee now lives in Tacoma close to her son and his family. Dee and I have known each other since the early 1970s in the Los Altos, California, area, and she actually moved to Georgia with us, living in the Alpharetta area for a few years, before moving back to California to be closer to her friends there.

When we lived in the Los Altos area of California with our family, our favorite place to go to for pizza was Round Table. Barney happened to see that a Round Table Pizza was close to Dee’s home.

Lynden, Washington
Next we drove to Lynden in the northwest part of the state close to the Canadian border where our friends Ken and Joanne live. We knew them when we both lived in the Mtn. View/Cupertino area of California. Joanne is the younger daughter of Barney and Gina, who were like my second parents.
Their town is home to Washington State’s largest Dutch settlement and is located in the heart of this region’s rich farmland known for producing some of the largest crops of raspberries in the country. If you’ve every eaten raspberries grown in the U.S., it’s probably from this community.

British Columbia just over the Canadian border
Celia and I were friends when we were in a study program at our local church, Peninsula Bible Church, in the 1980s. Since we were both single at the time, we really enjoyed hanging out together and sharing what we were learning. Celia now lives in British Columbia with her family, and we’ve been exchanging Christmas cards every year.

Celia and I talked and talked about life and what we’ve been learning over the years. We even included Barney in the conversation. The deli is close to two of the locations where When Calls the Heart is filmed that Barney had found. Celia hadn’t watched the series, but decided she’d start after our exploring. Barney and I started rewatching it after we were at both locations.
location 1

When filming, the church/school has so much grass in front of it. This church/school has pavement.
Then Barney encouraged me to walk farther into the town so I could see the main street; I did and started taking pictures. One of the workers came up to me and asked me not to put any of these main street pictures on social media since they might give away some of the plot twists that would be happening in the next season. I’ve looked at the pictures on my computer and couldn’t see anything new, but I’m concurring with his wishes.

The other location we drove to was by an outside cafe/bar that Barney had found. The server I talked to said we should just walk around to the back of the barn next to the cafe. Here’s what we found:

going back home
When we drove back toward the border crossing, we saw this international boundary marker. We saw some like this when we were in North Dakota Peace Gardens along the Canadian border.

The next post takes us to where we stayed just outside of Lynden and then to nearby Mt. Baker that’s in the Northern Cascade Mountains.
