After trying to go on this trip last year, we’re finally packed for a 5-month trip along the Lewis and Clark route from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way we’ll also be visiting some friends on our Christmas card list and checking out some places that we’ve always wanted to see. Come along with us to discover the U.S. in the early 1800s just after the Louisiana Purchase brought the U.S. much of the land west of the Mississippi River.

This trip ahead of us covers a period of time and challenges that are going to be so new to us. What do you know about these men and the president who sent them out? I only knew the basics, but was really curious to find out who Meriwether Lewis was (the real leader of the trip) and how his discoveries opened up our knowledge of the northwest.
What was his background so that he could explore the way he did as such a young man? Even just the fact that he could walk for hours with his dog without getting tired and knowing how plants could give medicinal help to his men amazed me. His teenage years prepared him for this trip.
Our oldest son gave us the following book last year to whet our appetites. We’re about half way through the book as the Corps of Discovery made it to the Pacific Ocean for the winter and then get ready to return to the East Coast to deliver Lewis and Clark’s notes to President Thomas Jefferson. Just like it took them more time to travel west than to get home (because they figured out better ways to navigate the land and rivers), we’ll be spending about 3 months traveling west and then 2 months coming home.

As we travel, we’ll be listening to Lewis’ original journals using chatGBT since the books are in the public domain; AI will be reading them out loud to us as we’re in different locations along the route. This is going to be a great trip, so glad you’re coming with us!
