Because our California granddaughter received a letter from Newberry College about perhaps playing soccer for them when she’s ready for college, we thought a day visit would be a good trip for us. Then we found out that one of her teammates who just graduated from high school was going to start her freshman year here, and we were really glad we came so her family could see these pictures. I went to a small, private liberal arts college like this one, and so many memories came flooding back as we were walking around.
Here’s some information from the school’s website.
- prime location: The beautifully landscaped 90-acre campus is situated in the heart of historic Newberry, South Carolina, one of Sweitzer & Fields’ “50 Best Small Southern Towns.”
- close knit community: With a welcoming atmosphere on campus and a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio in the classroom, Newberry is designed to be the students’ home away from home.
- challenging academic programs: The college offers 32 majors, online degree-completion programs and 5 dual-degree programs, grounded in the liberal arts that prepare students for lifetime success.
- competitive athletics: The sports teams are in the South Atlantic Conference, offering 21 NCAA Division II sports, cheerleading, and dance.
- highly ranked: Newberry College is consistently recognized for outstanding value, diversity, and overall quality.
One of the reasons I chose a small, liberal arts college was that classes were small enough that I would get to know my professors. At large universities, often classes are taught by graduate students, and I wanted to learn from the actual professors.
As we turned around from the sign at the beginning of this post, here’s what we saw.
Then we started driving down the road to find a way into the center of the college.

We didn’t see anything that looked like a student center, so we guess that a building like that isn’t popular any more.
Holland Hall is . . . the main administration building
The entrance to the school has this historical sign. Newberry is a fully accredited Lutheran controlled college chartered by the General Assembly of South Carolina on December 20, 1856.

The newer looking building at the end of the field is the workout area for the soccer team.

Ready to go back to college? This looks like it would be a good one.
