Big Bend National Park is huge. We’re staying just outside of the park at Study Butte RV Park, a relaxed (dirt and rock) RV campground in the communities of Study Butte and Terlingua. After doing laundry when we arrived (love those clean sheets!), we drove around our little town and saw some fun sites. We also drove into the national park to the ranger station, but more of that in the next post. Later on in the week, we saw some other sites around this area that we want to share with you.
Beautiful sunsets the first night!
Next day driving around town.
More about that in a future post..
entrance unusual headstones
Second night at our campsite we enjoyed eating dinner outside and waiting for another sunset. Cold mornings and late evenings, warm days.
So nice to be outside and enjoy the beauty of this land.
local library
Since WiFi is spotty at best at our campsite, we found out that we could go to the local public library at the schools and use their access. Twice this week we’ve been here so could post our blogs. Thanks so the town, school district, and the librarians!
and it has everything: TVs to eggs. Such a help to have it close by.
meals out
Before going to the library one day, we went out for breakfast to Expresso Y Poco Mas in Ghost Town Terlingua. Sure enjoyed our breakfast sandwiches and my coffee.
The restaurant served quite of few of us on this Thursday morning.
yes, this is the Chili Cook-Off Capital of the World!
view while eating breakfast another view
Dinner out on what we thought was our last night in Big Bend are, we had a great Mexican dinner and had wonderful WiFi at Chili Pepper Cafe.
On the wall by us was this great picture with Alvaro Obegon (who defeated Villa), Pancho Villa, John – Black Jack – Pershing from WWI fame, and a young George Patton from WWII fame behind Pershing. (See part 11 for more about Pershing in this area. Pershing unsuccessfully chased Villa for 9 months on orders from President Wilson, including forays into Mexico without their approval; finally President Wilson pulled Pershing out to go to Europe for WWI.) What history in front of us!
And we just thought we came to this restaurant for dinner and WiFi; instead we also found a piece of history that supported what we’ve been learning here. History is everywhere.
On our last night here, the clouds gave us a wonderful show, filling out the whole sky.
