Today we went to nearby Blue Spring State Park where the manatees find a refuge in an outlet on the St. John’s River supported by a natural spring. They come here in the winter because the water stays at a fairly constant level that is good for them. Over 370 manatees were counted this morning before the park opened. They are such beautiful and graceful animals.

A highlight today was talking with a couple we met along the way. They said they were from northern Minnesota, and I asked where. They said the iron range, and I asked where. They said north of Duluth, and I asked where. Then I told them I had worked summers as a waitress at a family resort on Lake Vermilion, and they asked where. I told them Pehrson’s Lodge, and he said his mother had worked there about 50 years ago. Yes, I had worked with his mother! Such a small world.
