Curiosity led us to wonder how Door County developed. The first residents were Indians who hunted, fished, and trapped furs. When the French trappers came, they traded with the Indians. Logging came next because of the white pines and the growing nation’s need for lumber. Stumps were left everywhere; the loggers just wanted the trees. Since fishing was plentiful, the Scandinavians came to the area. When lumber gave out, farmers moved in and began digging out stumps and rocks so they could develop their farms. Now corn grows everywhere, and the county is known for cherries and apples. Vacationers are now helping to support Door County. Amazing how an area changes over the years.
