After lunch in Sault Ste. Marie, we went to Valley Camp, a Great Lakes freighter (bulk carrier) that carried iron ore through the locks and is now a museum. The original ship was built in 1917. Its last voyage was in 1966.
This next picture shows the difference in the length of the bulk freighters that navigate the Great Lakes versus the smaller ones that are on the ocean. What a difference!
This picture is of replicas of freighters on the lakes. The Valley Camp is the freighter on the far left, so you can see the size difference between it and the freighters that now carry heavy loads.
The only reminder of the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter that sank in Lake Superior in 1975 are two life boats. Thanks to Gordon Lightfoot’s song, we know about this freighter sinking. It’s been fascinating to tour what one of these bulk carriers looked like. You’ll learn more about the Edmund Fitzgerald as we travel west along the Superior Lake coast line.
Here are some more pictures of the freighter.
