Don’t know if you’re familiar with Mackinac Island (in Lake Huron), but the only way to get there is by ferry or small plane. If you haven’t been there, be sure to put it on your bucket list.
The view of the famous hotel on the island is breathtaking.
On the island, the only way to get around is by walking, biking, or horsepower (except for an ambulance).
We took a horse-drawn carriage for a 1.5-hour tour around and through the island. Many of the workers on the island, including our tour guide, are students from eastern European countries who want to spend summers in the U.S.
Many of the homes date back to the 1800s when Mackinac Island began blossoming into a summer vacation destination. We loved seeing the unusual houses with a Victorian feel to them , . . .
the variety of ways horses are used on the island, and the Grand Hotel. The most famous movie filmed on the island with the hotel as a backup was Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour that was in filmed in 1980. These days visitors have to pay a fee to walk through the hotel, but it was worth it to see inside and then sit outside on the porch and drink iced tea.
We got in a lot of walking on this island that housed a fort in the 1700s and was part of the War of 1812.
