The first morning in Iowa we started driving north from McGregor to our first stop at the Effigy Mounds. I remember hearing about these mounds when I was young but had never made it here.
The mounds are in the shapes of animals, mainly bears and rabbits. Local Indians created them about 1200 years ago as religious sites and for ceremonies, they think. The best way to see the shapes is from an aerial view, which we weren’t able to do, so we have this sign.
Then we kept driving north and found a fairly new museum about the driftless area. Strange name, but it refers to the the lack of “drift” since glaciers were rare in the area. I’ll include more interesting info with the pictures.
The rest of the day we drove around the area enjoying the scenery and ended up putting 125 miles on the truck!
