When we were at the De Soto Wildlife Museum, we read a brochure about Lewis and Clark being in the area, so we went to a local state park that had some history of their trip. (We saw the end of their exploration when we were in Astoria, Oregon, visiting Barney’s sister a number of years ago.) This museum had life-size examples of the five boats they used to navigate the waterways to get to the Pacific ocean.
So much to learn about the early years of our nation and all that these men and women went through. We had never heard about round canoes, but in some situations, they were perfect. Since then we’ve seen other references to them.
These boats were covered in buffalo skins and were particularly useful in navigating rivers.
As we came across the west, we saw signs about the Pony Express, so I guess that’ll be something we explore in future trips.
As we drove into Tennessee, we began hearing the frog trees outside and banjo music playing inside the rest stops. Good to be back in the South. Home tonight.
